TRAUMA CENTER LEVELS INDIANA VERIFICATION
With the recent national verification from the American College of Surgeons, Memorial Hospital and Health Care is filling a rural void for trauma care in Southern Indiana. Prior to this, the only choices ambulance crews in this region could consider for trauma patients were located in Evansville. The Emergency Medical Services Commission enacted a rule in 2012 stating that trauma patients were to be transported to a trauma center, unless transport time exceeded 45 minutes or, in the judgment of the emergency medical services certified responder, a patient’s life will be endangered if care is delayed by going directly to a trauma center…”
Additionally, the hospital can be used to stabilize more severe trauma patients before they are transported to a trauma center with the ability to handle those types of injuries. The Level Three designation means the hospital is equipped to offer immediate and long-term treatment to the least severe trauma patients. Memorial Hospital received their Level Three verification as a Trauma Center in June and held a special convocation to celebrate the designation Wednesday morning at the hospital. Injuries in which time is of the essence in ensuring survivability. Falls, car crashes, industrial and farm accidents all can cause serious injuries.
